I never really paid much attention to how much olive oil we consume at Kitchen 511. That is, until five to six of us have been holed up at home for the past 34 days, and I realized we’re about to finish off bottle number 10. Or is it 11? Whatever the number, that’s a lotta’ olive oil, even for a family with the Italian last name Baroni. But between the nightly salads we eat after dinner, plus the midday ones we’re making for lunch now that we’re home all day, and the mounds of vegetables we’re sautéing and roasting, I suppose it shouldn’t come as such a surprise. California Olive Ranch is my current favorite. It’s not heavy, which means it doesn’t overwhelm the vinaigrette, which is of great importance to my gang. And it appears we’re not the only ones loving it. I spotted it on Athena Calderone’s kitchen counter on her @eyeswoon Insta, and while @alisoneroman was demonstrating how to make her internet-famous Chickpea Stew (coming to Kitchen 511 real soon), as well as in New York magazine’s Strategist column, The Best Olive Oils, According to People Who Consume a Lot of It, where it was named “The Best Overall Olive Oil.” I was buying it at our local Old World market, until I realized I could get it for $9 less a bottle (yup, you read that right, $9 less per 25.4 oz. bottle!) at Target (where I ordered 5 bottles—the max—@ $10.99 each and picked it up at the super convenient pick-up counter just inside the store). The best price I found on Amazon for the 25.4 oz. bottle was $16.76, including free shipping. You might also want to check out your local grocery store chains. My friend Johanna buys it at Stop & Shop, where the 24.5 oz. glass bottle is typically $12.39 (although I just spotted it on their shelves for $10.86). They also sell a 47.3 bottle for $20.59, but it’s plastic, which is a problem for some (including me). I’m not a big-store shopper, so I have no idea if Costco sells it and, if so, at what price; but the absolute best deal of all (which Christian dug up) is a 5-gallon vat from foodservicedirect.com, which, even after factoring in the $24 shipping fee, is by far the cheapest way to go (.32/oz. vs. Target’s .43/oz.). And they claim it’s ready to ship within 1 business day. With a shelf life of 540 days, and another month or so of quarantining ahead of us according to Cuomo, I’m seriously considering it.
