O Lar's Sangria

O Lar's Sangria

Last night, we celebrated Max's 21st Birthday at our favorite local restaurant, O Lar in Piermont (where we celebrate all of our birthdays!). Max's big day isn't until August 29; but since he and Bella are leaving for school on Wednesday, we celebrated early. As we usually do, we ordered a pitcher of the delicious red-wine sangria. Since Miguel (O Lar's owner) was kind enough to share the recipe with Max a while back, we serve the same sangria at all of our summer parties. And I get asked for the recipe on a weekly basis by guests who love it as much as we do. If you like sangria like we like sangria, here you go...

Ingredients

  • 1 gallon Carlo Rossi Burgundy wine (or red wine of your choice)

  • 20 teaspoons of super-fine sugar (Max starts with 10-15 and then adds more, if needed).

  • 6-8 lemons, cut into wedges (can use less)

  • 6-8 oranges, quartered (can use less)

  • 4-5 apples, quartered (can use less)

  • 1 container each of raspberries, blueberries and strawberries, sautéed in some of the sugar

  • 8 oz. Felipe II Brandy

  • 10 oz. DeKuyper Triple Sec

  • Cinnamon sticks (optional)

  • 2-3 bottles club soda (Max usually adds 2)

  • Lots of ice

Preparation

  1. If you don't have super-fine sugar, dissolve sugar in a little hot water first.

  2. If you're serving immediately, combine all ingredients in a large pitcher and add some ice to the wine mixture, as well as to individual glasses. If you're chilling wine mixture before serving, add the ice and club soda just before serving.

  3. If using cinnamon sticks, add one to each glass.
